French actor Alain Delon and the German actress Romy Schneider, who in the 1960s was named the most beautiful woman in the world, fell in love at first sight when they met on the set of the film La Piscine (The Swimming Pool), which was filmed in France in 1965. Romy Schneider była już wówczas gwiazdą na skalę europejską. Jej rola w trylogii o austriackiej cesarzowej Sissi uczyniła ją narodowym bożyszczem i chętnie angażowaną aktorką. Z kolei Delon był jeszcze mało znany, dopiero zaczynał swoją karierę. W filmie miał być tłem dla słynnej niemieckiej gwiazdy. Podczas pobytu narzeczonej w USA za pośrednictwem swojego przyjaciela, Georgesa Beaume’a przekazał Romy list ze swoją decyzją o odejściu. Aktorka niezwykle mocno przeżyła tę wiadomość. Popadła w depresję, a nawet targnęła się na swoje życie. Decyzja Delona była tym bardziej raniąca, że wkrótce aktor poślubił poznaną na planie Samuraja modelkę, Nathalie Canovas, z którą nawiązał romans jeszcze w trakcie związku z Romy. Przez pięć lat nie udało mi się wytrzebić tego, co wpajano w nią przez dwadzieścia. Podobnie jak we mnie jest dwóch, trzech, ba, nawet czterech Alainów Delonów, tak w niej są dwie Romy Schneider. Ona sama to wie. Jedną Romy kochałem ponad wszystko na świecie, drugiej równie mocno nienawidziłem”. To na planie tego filmu spotkali się po raz pierwszy od swojego spektakularnego rozstania. Co więcej, zagrali kochanków (!), a namiętność bijąca od ich relacji z poszczególnych kadrów wydaje się całkowicie autentyczna. Delon był również przy Romy w najtragiczniejszym momencie jej życia – gdy zmarł jej czternastoletni syn David w 1981 roku. To francuski aktor zorganizował pogrzeb i zadbał o prywatność byłej narzeczonej. Bardzo starał się, by Schneider wróciła do równowagi psychicznej. Niestety to ostatnie zadanie się nie udało – Romy najprawdopodobniej popełniła samobójstwo w paryskim hotelu 29 maja 1982 roku. Alain zjawił się na miejscu jako jeden z pierwszych i zamknął się z jej ciałem w samotności, by opłakać ukochaną. Załatwił pogrzebowe formalności, choć sam nie wziął udziału w ceremonii – stwierdził, że go to przerosło. Istnieje również plotka głosząca, że aktorka nie leży w oficjalnym miejscu pochówku, ale że Delon pochował Romy w swojej posiadłości. Przez kolejne lata Alain często wspominał swoją dawną wielką miłość. To on odebrał pośmiertnie przyznanego jej honorowego Cezara w 2008 roku. Zapytany, czy żałuje, że nie ożenił się przed laty z niemiecką aktorką, odpowiedział twierdząco. Czy gdyby Romy i Alain zostali małżeństwem historia potoczyłaby się inaczej?
